Default One per purchase - aarrggh!

So I have moved - to an area in FL with a well stocked, really nice, big CVS. And oh my oh my, they just have to be strict with all coupons.

So today, I went in with a bunch of the $3 off two Herbal Essence. They were on sale 2 for $5. I bought 6 and used three coupons. Oh my. One per purchase ma'am. Yes ma'am, that;s in all the CVS stores now. They just HAVE to be so strict with coupons, you see.

Fortunately they agreed to ring them up as separate transactions. I had time, and the store was not busy. They were very nice. But oh my oh my, so strict you know. Just can't be too careful.

In one of the transactions, they forgot to ring in a CVS coupon. Had to do it over. Oh, wait, can't scan those other coupons again. So I said forget it. I can still use it on another purchase at another time.

Now, I never had this in the teeny tiny little store in NJ that never had enough of anything. So has this changed in the past month or so? Anyone else running into this?

Is the coupon fine print, "Only one per household?"
(Which I very much doubt here.)

Only one manufacturer coupon, on one item per order?

Not allowing two of the same manufacturer's coupons per order on two items?
That's pretty odd, if you ask me.

At least they allowed you to do the separate check-outs to get the good deals.

Sounds like a crazy CVS to me.

I have found that every store is different. I am so used to all my stores that I don't even think twice. I know that if I have a more difficult transaction, I don't even attempt to go to store A. in fact, store A is reserved for VERY simple one or two items, one or two coupons transactions. Now, Store B is great and they get all my confusing transactions!

Limiting one per transaction is really annoying. Folks don't seem to know the difference between a transaction and a purchase. You were purchasing 6 bottles of Shampoo.....

Experiment with the various stores in the area... Hopefully, you can find one that is easier on coupons. They are, afterall, reimbursed by the manufacturer.

Good luck! And enjoy Florida!

Thanks, ladies. I think I will email corporate and if the answer is what we all know is common sense, I will bring it with me to the stores.

I have errands in another area today where there is a CVS, so I will try that one.

Believe it or not, I haven't stepped into CVS for over a month...closer to 2 months, actually. Mostly due to pregnancy issues, but also because I got tired of them treating me like a criminal for using mfr coupons ("How do you get so many coupons?") and CVS coupons ("Did you print this from your computer?"), and god forbid if I tried to use a CVS "$4 off $20" crt.
But I am sorry they treated you like that. Maybe you could chat with the manager, to find out if the employees are just *ahem* misinformed...

It WAS the manager. Very polite, but very firm. "No ma'am, EVERYONE has to be very strict now about coupons. ALL THE CVS STORES ARE DOING THIS."

We'll see. I emailed corporate.

SOOOO glad you posted this! I have had the same problem recently at my CVS's in Indiana. They have chosen to override and put the coupons through, but they are taking the "one coupon per PURCHASE" statement to mean that there can only be one per TRANSACTION. My understanding is that one per PURCHASE just means that if I use 5 coupons for $ off 1, I have to buy 5 items. Isn't this right? I hate to tell them that they're wrong, because if the manufacturers aren't reimbursing them for the coupons, then the store has to eat the difference, ?But I REALLY don't think that's what the wording on the coupon means. Am I wrong?

This apparently does come from corporate. Here is their response:

Dear Ms. McMonagle,

ALL Earned Extra Bucks coupons associated with an ExtraCare card may now be redeemed in a single transaction. The retail price must be greater than the combined total of all coupons. Please keep in mind there is no cash value back for any unused portion of the coupon.

NOTE: Use of Manufacturer coupons remains limited to one per item in any transaction.

Very frustrating for us stockpilers.

Ugh. So I guess I should either give up on CVS or plan to spend a couple hours there next time I go!
On the positive side, I do appreciate the fact that when they see me coming toward the register, they always ask me if I'm going to do multiple transactions, and when I say yes (because I like to get all my extra bucks and then use them for the non-ECB items), they always call another person up to open up a second checkout lane for other customers, even if there isn't a line. I really appreciate this, because I would feel badly if people had to wait to buy a pack of gum while I did my whole complicated transaction.
