Default oww pain owww!!! updated with answer

Kai has never latched on fully and has a super silly gag reflex but not tongue tied...so he's almost 4 weeks i think or maybe he is 4 weeks lol idk anyway i've been okay-ish with the not full latch cause it hurts but its bareable. However yesterday he was super hungry or something. I don't normally change sides while feeding...and i was not watching the clock while he was feeding...he fed from one side for a full hour. It hurt real bad by the time he was done. Then the next feeding he did the same to the other side! So now I am sore all over.....and he kept feeding more than normal yesterday and now its just crazy hard to not jump when he latches and eats...they're also sticking to the breast pads---kinda weird. idk what to do to fix it.

you're going to have to fix his latch. try offering it to him, but not let him take it until he opens wide. he could be eating longer because of the poor latch too.

If he's not latched right it will take longer to eat. You really shouldn't let him stay on for that long. Also you should really switch sides b/c that can effect your supply. My advise is to PM Val here or on facebook. She usually has the answers!

What position are you feeding him in? With my poor latchers, I found that feeding via football hold helped the latch. I am going to guess that the pain is due to the poor latch. . .if they don't open wide it does hurt. However, just be aware of thrush as a possibility . . .

As far as the extra feedings. . .that's prime time for a good old fashioned growth spurt. I'm guessing that he's not actively sucking for an hour. . .but just kind of hanging there. It's fine. . .but if it bothers you, then by all means break his suction.

If you are not switching sides at each feeding, have you considered/looked into the possibility that you have too much milk? Based on the amount he's gaining and the fact that you are not having supply issues, it sounds like you have a lot of milk - which can in turn affect supply. There are tricks to fix that if you think that is the issue let me know and I'll tell you how to work with that.

my goodness I did not even think of thrush.....that is a huge possibility....his tongue is white. I am thinking maybe he has/does latch how he does cause my milk really flows. i do have more control football hold but then he gags at me and cries lol i am a sucker i guess. currently it hurts bad on both sides at once when he feeds. Him eating for a long time does not actually bother me but this new pain does. him eating is my break (sorry i can't help you) time lmbo

Get the thrush checked out. That might well fix the pain.

If you have a big supply, it can help to express first so the baby doesn't get the let down gush. . .and also nursing lying down helps a lot.

Isn't it great to have some concrete answers? Here's to a speedy recovery!

I had some thrush flare ups with Gabriel. I got in the habit of eating yogurt every day and within a week all signs of thrush were gone. As soon as I missed a couple of days it started to come back. I got lucky that I never needed the meds for it. I hear they are rather messy to contend with.

Yogurt with the active cultures is healthy for all of us - nursing or not. Good points, friends!
