Default paid for caring for elderly mother

Hi,
I'm new here and this would be my first post.
First I'd like to express my graditude for this forum, I've been looking around and have found lots of good advice and help here.
Anyway, I am 55 yrs old, and I'm the caregiver for my 88 yr old mother. My husband works, but we live in Michigan and the economy is very bad right now. I am unable to get a job because I have to be with my mother 24/7.
I was wondering if there was any kind of financial help out there for people like me? We're barely making it!
My mom gets a check for $1300 every month and she has no savings. My husband makes less than $1200 a month from his job.
Any information regarding this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks....

Welcome to the board, Suzi!

You are a very special daughter for caring for your mother.
Bless your heart!

I am uncertain of the specific guidelines from the Dept of Aging
about finances. Your local county has a Dept of Aging office
that can make a home visit and see if your mother qualifies for free
for help with homemaker chores, bathing, hygiene.

In some situations, they will pay family to be the caregiver.

There is also Public Health and Home Health that can supply short term RN care, cna care (like 30 - 60 minutes for 2 - 3 times per week) with a physician's order. Medicare would cover the cost.

Perhaps some of our friends can offer other help that may be available.

Wishing you all the best!

Welcome to families!!
Have you looked into home health care? If she is on Medicaid/care it would not cost much if anything. And you might even be the one to care for her, then she will be cared for by you and you get paid for it too. Its a win/win! I do this here in TX, I work for Texas home health care, and care for my mom 5 days a week.

oops I should have read Angie's post first

Yes i am a home health nurse and most of my patients or clients, are being taken care of by Medicare, Health Insurance, of the office of Aging will send someone if you cannot afford it. I had a man who could no longer afford me so the office of Aging sent someone to help with Activites of Daily living (bathing, eating, walking, and supervision) Good Luck and you are a wonderful person for not just throwing your mother in a home!!!!
