Default Paid to recycle?

Or town is instituting a program for recycling. For $3 extra month (we already get free recycling pick up through our town taxes), we could have a recycling bin that is embedded with an RDFI chip. The recyclers would weigh the bin and input that weight. The more you recycle, the more points you get. Those points can be traded in for rewards at local businesses. You can't acquire more than $35, which is less than the cost of the extra fee per year. Is there something that I am missing here? Does anyone have this sort of program?

That sounds rather dodgy to me - if you recycle lots you can get something back, but still not enough to cover the cost of the scheme? You probably won't get your maximum allowance each year anyway will you? What if you go on holiday / just don't buy much that can be recycled one week.

Is there a way you can recycle for free? In the UK we have public recycling bins all over the place where people can take bottles / papers for recycling. It's not as convenient, but it's free - I just bag everything up and do a trip once every few weeks.

I'm in the UK and we have to recycle here. We are limited as to how much other waste we can throw out . We have a separate collection weekly for recycle stuff and food waste which all goes to be composted down. It's estimated that UK landfill sites will be full in 9 years time.

The scheme you taking out sounds like company attempting to make money out of something people already get for free!

Maybe they are just trying to increase participation? Some people won't bother going out of their way to do anything unless there is something in it for them. Here we have manadatory recycling, no incentives, but you can get a fine if you don't recycle.
