Default penicillin allergy and group b strep

So i got a call from Dr, say my unrine test came back growing group b strep. I think she could have said it a better way. Any way having an allergic reaction as a young child they asked what happened, when and for all the details. I call mom, I was 6, and got a small rash.
Is a penicillin allergy like a childhood bee/wasp allergy? I grew out of those, went from carring an epi pen to not worring about it. Will they go ahead and use the anti-b from the penicillin family or use the others that do not work as well?
I have read it not a big deal, but its the first time I have had to deal with this and it was/is a bit suprising!

my husband is allergic to penicillin, and despite what he thinks..he can't eat certain cheeses because of it (ricotta, bleu, etc) and sometimes has an issue with leftovers. if he needs an antibiotic, they normally prescribe amoxicillin.. he's never had an issue with it. i guess it's close enough to penicillin to the the "-cillin" but far enough away that its not harmful to him

did that make sense?

I can eat ricotta, I chose not to YUCK

I was thinking I took amoxicillin with in the last few years for something, but I really can not remember. ampicillin is what she said they may try, however they are going to test the other anti-b's on the cultures and see how they treat it. I may be able to use another anti-b or take ampiciliin under very strict conditions. But she also said we will most likely wait until labor to start before using anti-b, which is fine with me!

I don't have an a penicillen allergy but I did test positive for Grp B this time round..they didn't routinely test back when I had the other 2 and actually with my DD she developed late onset Grp B at 4 1/2 wks and was in the hospital for a week...it was no fun at all..a rough week...In any case, this time as soon as I went into the hospital in labour they hung a bag of anti-b that ran through really quickly and if I had been in labour for longer than I was they would've hung a bag every 4 hours they said...

I've now had two doctors tell me in my adult life that patients can break out in a rash when they are given an anti-biotic when they actually have a viral infection. I had a rash with pencillin but had the strep thing too and took amoxicillin while in labor.

mil is allergic to pencillin, so when Gabby was to have her first course of amoxicillin i mention it to the Dr and he told me that you aren't at higher risk of having a pencillin allergic just because it's in the family (guess it's just one of them things that happen)

i also had hives while i was on a strong pencillin course (put on the pencillin cos i had broke out in hives, when the dr check me over it turned out i had tonsillitis and he thought the first lot of hives was tonsillitis related)... we aren't sure if it was due to pencillin or something else but i have amoxicillin almost every time i need anti b's and i've never had an issue
