poor latch on
Ok Val I read your blog about correcting it. Here is the problem, Cristi does not open her mouth wide, therefore her lips are inverted on the nipple. Helping her open her mouth wider and pulling her lip out should fix the pain?

Her chin Ollie, when you try to latch and she opens gently push her chin down with your thumb. If she's not latched on repeat....feed her when she's hungry but not starving so she doesn't get frustrated

Yes. . .what Lessly said. If that isn't working, quite right, hold your breast so that you can push her chin down with your fore finger while you guide your nipple in through the top of her mouth. (Gosh that sounds more complicated. . .) If that is done right, then you should be able to gently use your finger to unturn her lips.
If it's not working PM me and I'll give you my phone number and you can call me. It might be tender when she firsts latch on but it should dissipate quickly. If the whole nursing session is painful--it's a bad latch.

When in the hospital the whole session on the right side was painful, not on the left side. But after I got home, more relaxed I guess and I read the your blog the first thing, it was just at the start. The nurses were very busy, and since it was not my first I guess i kinda got pushed back. The feeding I just finished only hurt for 5-10 seconds, I opened her mouth more, making sure her lips were out, it was much better!! I wish I had your blogs with me at the hospital! Thanks Lessly and Val both, we will see how well it goes tonight and tomorrow.

Thanks--I'm glad you find them helpful. I could market and sell them. . you know. . .Dr. Val's boob guides. (hmmm. . .or maybe not)
On a serious note. . .if you're in crisis mode (like sometimes babies who normally latch fine just decide not to do so in the middle of the night. . .or tomorrow) try switching positions. I probably say that somewhere, but sometimes for some babies it works. Generally speaking, the football hold is the easiest for babies to get it.
But in any case. . .it sounds like you're doing great. (I don't think you need my boob guide!)

I love the football hold. At first it was the only way I could get her to latch on properly!

That's something I didn't learn until baby #3. My first two only did the cradle hold.

VAL! They want me to supplement her over night, 20 minutes of nursing then 2 oz of formula. Because her Bili levels are too high, and she still was having tarry poops. They have started changing this evening, and my milk is REALLY coming in now. I have nothing of the supplementing kind.....
