All portable heaters make me nervous. No matter how safe they are supposed to be, they are fire hazards.
I would not use one that relies on electricity, as this can overload your circuitry and cause a fire. Freestanding ones should also be checked for safety of the fuel. Another thing is, if the thing sparks for any reason, you want it on a surface that is fire resistant (stone, cement).
Never buy them used. And rather than buying them on the web, if possible, buy them from a local dealer who offers written guarantees. That way you have some legal recourse (assuming you used it correctly) if your house burns down and homeowners or renters insurance does not cover it.
