Question Potty training and verbal skills

Ok, so I know people have posted a thousand times asking for potty training advice. I can't seem to find anything that answers a question similar to mine so thought I'd post a new thread!

Alyssa is showing lots of signs of being ready to potty train, and my mom even said this to me today (I had been noticing it for awhile). She doesn't wet her diaper at night anymore. Every single time she has a wet diaper, she pulls it off. And thats even with any type of clothing on-this girl is good.

She'll sit on her potty now (which has always been in the bathroom-when I go, I see sometimes if she wants to...of course she only did it once, which I praised her tremedously for!!!) But I don't know if her communication skills are good enough for this training to really kick in. I have had her going to a speech therapist because she isn't talking much. She babbles alot, but I often wonder if she understands anything I say! Her speech is developing along the right timeline, just very, very delayed.

So I guess my question would be something along the lines of-How important are communication and verbal skills when learning to train? Are there some special things I can do to increase her understanding of using the potty? I'm going to ask the speech therapist when I see her next week, but just thought y'all might have some helpful advice before then. Thanks!

And Val...blog idea! How to potty-train a child with a speech delay or disorder.

Have you thought about trying baby sign, or something similar? That may help a lot

I have been working on baby signing for a long time. She only knows two-diaper change and eat. Now the sign for diaper involves ripping off the actual diaper!

Potty training really is a process and I suspect that she has all the skills to tell you. If she's pulling her diaper off after she goes every time, my suggestion is to pick a weekend when you are doing nothing but hanging around and:

1) Stick her in training underwear.
2) Take her to sit on the potty every half an hour or so.

Kids that can recognize wet in a diaper are very likely to associate the concept very quickly. I assume she points and stuff right? I suspect that's all that's needed.
