Default Pre term labor

So, my sister-in-law is 24 weeks pg. She had some really bad pain today in her lower abdomen and back. So after calling the Dr. they told her to go to L&D. She spent all day at the hospital.
They gave her a shot to stop labor. At that point the pain subsided a lot (from a 7 or 8 to a 3 or 4) After the evening started they gave her another shot. They have never used the term preterm labor, but isn't that more or less what is going on? They also said that the cervix is thinning out. She is spending the night in the hospital and going to see a specialist in the morning.
I know that none of you can predict what will happen, but does it sound like she will be put on bed rest? Has anyone had this happen and go on to full term without bed rest?
Does anyone with a similar story have any thoughts?
Is a baby viable at 24 weeks?

We are also asking for any prayers for this baby girl to stay put!!
Thank you!!

A baby is considered viable at 24 weeks. It's likely they will want her to be on bedrest at least till they can be sure labour's stopped because even another week or two of baking can make huge difference.

From what I've read 24 week babies have a 50% chance of survival and half of those who survive will have permanent problems due to being born early...the larger the baby the better the chances. If they think she's going to have the baby with in the next week then they'll give her steriods for the baby so the baby will be bigger.
At 28 weeks they have a 80% of making it and 90% at 32 weeks.

Hoping they gave her instructions for bedrest,
taking things easy,
no baby dancing,
and to take care of herself.

Prayers for her & baby too.

This is a great site:

Yes at 24 weeks your looking at a 50% chance of survival but the serious complication rate is high. I really hope she is ok. Let us know what happens.

Well, it took 2 shots yesterday to get the labor to stop. But they did get it to stop. She spent the night in the hospital. The did tell her that her cervix was thinning out. (Yikes?)
But they sent her home this morning and said to take it easy. That was it. Take it easy, and if anything else happens over the weekend then they will get her in to see a high risk dr. She has a almost 3 year old who is 45 pounds and expects to be carried and picked up. I know that she isn't going to stop doing that.....I am worried. But, nothing I can do.

Has anyone out there, gone into preterm labor, and had them stop it, go on to full term? Or should we be expecting this to happen again?

My friend went into labour repeatedly from 24 weeks to the point where her cervix was completely thinned out but she did make it to 40 weeks and had a healthy 7lb girl.

Afterwards they discovered she had a persistent kidney infection and every time her temperature had gone up she's started to have contractions.

I hope your SIL and your niece are ok.

I had preterm labor many times with Kianna...I'm not sure at what point but they gave me the shots and they made it stop everytime. One time all it took was lots of water...and another time I had a infection. I had a irritable uterus though so it made it easy to go into preterm labor. I made it full term with her.

I didn't go into preterm labor with Kate and had her premature....I swear there was no labor pain at all till I was 8 cm dilated and they had induced me. So I think you really just never know what is going to happen and just pray and hope for the best.
