Default pregnancy tests

How reliable are pregnancy tests if the expiry date on the packet is January 2009?

the reliability factor goes down a great deal. the pregnancy kit would still work. but the expiry date indicates the period where the product will yield optimum results.

so if it was used and the result was positive, could that positive result be wrong?

My guess is that it is unlikely it would affect a positive result (after all, it must be detecting some kind of hormone). But if the result was negative, I'd question the results.

That's what I thought but I've since read that if you use a pregnancy test after it's expiry you can get a false positive. Don't understand how as surely it picks up hcg to even get a positive? I had 2 tests left, both expired Jan'09, I took one test, my fiance took the other. His result was negative (as you'd expect) whereas mine was positive. So... I now have to wait till some new tests arrive in the post (hopefully tomorrow) to be sure. Fingers crossed!
