Default Public Transportation

Whatwere your thoughts on the public transportation in Europe? I rode the bus the whole time I was in France and loved it. Anyone have any good/bad public transportation stories to share?

The Tube in London was great! You can get anywhere utilizing that system. My husband and I were so comfortable with the system that we knew if for some reason we got seperated in the crowds we could easily meet back up at a particular station within 5 to 10 minutes. Using the day/week pass was definitely the fastest way to go versus paying each time.

I agree with you, verbena -- the tube in London is great. My sister gave us the tip that if you stayed at a hotel in Gatwick, you could get an express ticket that covered the tube, buses, everything. The express ticket was about 10 pounds, and the hotel significantly less expensive than anything downtown. Of course, you miss all the delightful architectural and historical atmosphere.

My mom and I rode Eurail (more expensive than paying for individuals trips but also a headache saver) from Munich to Vienna by way of Salzburg, from Vienna to Budapest and back, then from Vienna to Venice and Innsbruck back to Munich. Most of our inner city subway fares were covered by Eurail as were buses. Overnight trips had to be booked at the Eurail office.
