I have such mixed feelings on this whole thing. I would love to have our troops come home. I have no clue what the heck Bush thinks he is doing. I am sad that the rest of the world sees us Americans the way they do. But my fear is that if we did pull our troops out now, are we going to do much more harm to not finish what we've started? And I wonder how much the media has skewed our view of the war because of all the negativity poured into it when there are actually lives being saved and people being freed over there that we never see? I think the war needs to end but I just don't know how we can get ourselves out of this one.

How are people being "freed"? Freed to do what, ethnically cleanse each other? How is there a net gain of lives saved? Every report agrees that mortality is way, way up from before the invasion (and that despite the horrific effects of the pre-invasion embargo that WE imposed.) How has it benefited the West to replace a secular leader, however brutal, with a "democratic" Shi'ite government in bed with the Iranians?
The invasion was immoral on principle and has been a complete catastrophe in practice, on every possible level.

I just joined this site today, and this thread caught my eye. My DH is active duty military, serving on the ground in Iraq, and I have enjoyed reading everyone's opinions.

As a former Army sergeant, we should never have entered this war in the first place. This was an intentionally misdirected war from the get-go. Add to that, this president hasn't made a sound decision up to this point, so why should he start now? What the U. S. government is afraid of, is that if the American troops are called home, this enemy will bring the war to us...a dreadful thought that will add to what the *real* enemy (Bin Laden) did to us on 9/11.
