Default question

My son turned two months old on the 24th of Jan and he still isn't really cooing. He does a little here and there but no definate gabbing? Should I be concerned for a quiet 11 week old?

Yes, he cries- and sometimes gurgles at me...he grunts a lot, too. Just no constant cooing...ykwim. He'll coo once and stop.

Yes. . .you need to call your pediatrician and have him evaluated. Did he have a newborn screening for hearing?

Yes, he passed both ears as an infant and he responds to sound. Smiles when spoken to and even screeches a little.

I didn't mention it to him at his well baby. I assumed since he did coo some that he was fine..just quiet.

I almost hate answer questions like this online bc I hate to make you paranoid for nothing. . . But if it were my child. . .

I would be concerned enough to call the pedi and ask for an extra appointment just to check it out unless you're going soon for another well baby check up. Why? Because according to every developmental milestone marker guideline out there, babies coo between 0 and 2 mos old. To not really coo by 11 weeks is late.

HOWEVER, (and notice how I put that in big, bold, capital letters?) just because he's not cooing doesn't mean something is wrong. Babies have not read the textbooks and have not been informed of the charts and so consequently they just don't always follow it. It's really when he misses several developmental markers in a row that you have to start being concerned. All that to say, yes, check it out. It's definitely on the much later end of when he should be doing it but your pedi will look at a whole bunch of stuff and chances are it's all fine.

Thanks! Our Pedi said that since he does have the ability(he was doing it to our doc as he spoke to the baby) that he may just not be a big talker and he'll make up for that in his toddler years. All his other milestones are right on track..

So, one less worry! Thansk for all you help!

Yeah!!! Yes, usually when something is wrong. . .several things are off. . .but sometimes parents don't realize it. Much better to be safe than sorry IMO!
