Default Question about Fairness

Here is what happened:

8 of us booked a trip to San Diego. One person was in charge of booking the trip via Expedia. Since Expedia didn't allow us to book all 8 people in one transaction, she did it in two transactions of 4 people each. However, she accidently booked the second group of 4 people (including me, DH, and another couple) for the wrong flight-- the flight was supposed to be for 9:15AM and she accidently booked us for a 9:15PM flight! The first group did get booked correctly, for the 9:15AM flight.

I was very understanding about the mistake. I know she is human and this seemed to be an easy mistake to make. I also did everything in my power to get the 4 of us changed to the morning flight. The best I could do is that we would wait until 12:00AM the morning of the flight and buy "stand-by" tickets online for $50/person. That was a fine idea, and that's what we did.

Now here is the dilemma-- Who pays the $50 for the 4 stand by tickets? Do we each pay for our own, or does my friend, who made the mistake, pay for them? DH and I had to choose between either paying $100 (for two of the $50 tickets) or miss an entire day's worth of fun in the sun! The plane was to land at 11:00AM, Cali time. Otherwise, if we took the night flight, it would land at 11:00PM, Cali time! We would miss all the fun, including the dinner reservations we had already made.

So who should pay for the $200 (4 stand by tickets at $50 each)? The 4 of us who got booked on the wrong flight or the person who made the mistake?
