Default Question for the runners

I've been trying to get back into running. I'm starting on the treadmill and have been taking it very, very slow like starting out at 5mph and been taking a walk break about 9 min in. I used to run cross-country in high school and really want to get back to were I used to be 2 miles in about 15 min but, i'm finding it very difficult because I have been getting these god awful stitches in my side and have tried slowing down to 4.5mph and breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth neither works. I'm getting very discouraged here do you guys have any suggestions for me. TIA

I am not a runner, I have an allergy to physical activity lol (really I'm just super lazy). However in my last year of high school, in my PE/ Health class we went through all the different types of training and how the wrong one can really set your progress back. First of all we were taught to know your goal. So you want to be able to run 2 miles in 15 mins like in high school. HOw long ago was high school for you?? Realistically you cannot expect your body to get used to doing something it hasnt done in a while.
Have you been doing any other exercise since high school to keep your fitness levels up? If not, then thats what you need to focus on first. From what I can gather your goal to run 2 miles in 15mins is a long term goal (not five years off, but not next week either). So in order to get there set yourself some short term goals. Maybe start with just powerwalking first then gradually as your fitness level builds, then you can start on the jogging.

Or another thing we were taught was progressive overload. The theory behind this is that as your body adjusts to the increase in training, you start doing a bit more, pushing yourself a bit harder. If you want more info on that, google "progressive overload" and there will be heaps more info for you.

Good Luck!

I was an avid runner before I was pregnant. I was also a track coach. I'm now trying to get back in it too. The stitches will come. Bad part is... you have to run through them to get rid of them. If you stop running when they come, you won't ever get rid of them. It's a conditioning thing. Kinda like your pace. Your pace will improve as you keep at it. It will be painful at first, but eventually you will be able to run with out having them.
Good luck!

Labhaoise, I don't have much patience i'm starting at the lowest pace that I will allow myself. High school was many, many moons ago the last time I ran in highschool was sophmore year so that was about 15 years ago. I have been running on and off since then.
Swt 1899, I will try that tonight when I start to get one. I have tried that before but, it seems like the pain just gets worse. Like you said its a conditioning thing and I will just get trough the pain. Can you alosrecomend any stretching techniques that might help. TIA
