Default "Big Boy Bed" transition

This weekend our little guy is making the transition to his "big boy bed"

He's 21 months and is perfectly content in his crib--in fact, he'll sit in there and play for 30 mins after he wakes up, if I let him. He'll also sit in there and play if I put him down for his nap and he's not ready to sleep.

The only reason we're moving him out of the crib is I am 24 weeks pregnant and we need the crib for the baby and we want to get him used to his bed before the baby comes.

We moved nearly 3 weeks ago and since then DS has been sleeping in his pack'n'play because we're just going to set up the crib in the baby's room and DH hasn't had the time to put it together, so he hasn't actually slept in his "real" crib since Memorial Day weekend.

Do any of you have any advice about how to make this transition? We're going to put the boxsprings and mattress on the floor with no bed frame. We're also going to get a side rail to prevent him from rolling out.

How do you teach a toddler to stay in bed until Mommy or Daddy get him? How do you teach him to sleep in a bed, when he's used to a crib?

Honestly, I've been tempted to keep him in the crib and put the baby in the pack'n'play when she arrives in Sept., but DH thinks the time is now for the big boy bed transition. (Co-sleeping is not an option--DH is too light of a sleeper) I know it'll be easier instead of having to "fight" a toddler at the same time I'm a sleep deprived mom to a newborn.
