Default Red birthmarks

A neighbor recently had a baby who is healthy, but has huge red birthmarks on her face, scalp, and body. I don't mean just a little cherry spot, I mean really huge. The doctor says these will fade, but if they don't fade on the face, it will be disfiguring. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I don't have any personal experience, but a gal that I went to high school with had a red birthmark all over one side of her face. She was a cheerleader. I guess she never let it get to her. It didn't seem to disfigure her either, as long as you don't consider that half of her face was covered in a birthmark....

There is surgery that can be done to reduce the redness. But they will most likely fade with time. My daughter has an angel's kiss red birthmark at her widow's peak. She's only two, but it has already faded a lot.

My son also has a small strawberry birthmark on his scalp and it has faded (it is still raised but is skin-color) now that he's almost 4.
His is not noticable or disfiguring but I was told when he was born that doctors usually wait several years for it to fade naturally and if it is not faded by the time a child is old enough to be teased by peers that they can do surgery to reduce or eliminate the birthmark.
I believe in certain situations these marks are watched closely as they may indicate other problems.

I was born with a red birthmark right where my watch should be. In fact, when kids asked me "What's that???" I would tell them it was my watch. Many believed it!! The main point is that it faded by the time I hit high school. I think laserwork can be useful for more persistent birthmarks.

My daughter has a port wine stain on her face. I highly recommend http://www.birthmarks.com as a fantastic resource for information about vascular birthmarks. I've found the people there very supportive and the information they share absolutely invaluable.

My birthmark was actuaally a huge red one the size of my forehead...in the middle of my forehead. I dont think anyone has noticed it, ever actually. It faded when i was very young, and I only see it when i get a good tan, then that area is a slightly different color. Easily covered up with a little makup, and no one nootices even without the markeup.
