Religious books removed from prison libraries
What do you think of this?
Seems to me that if you are in prison for a while, and you have been turning your life around by turning to religion, they are NOW going to tell you that you can't have your books and resources available to you?
I think this is crazy.

It's not that they can't have any. . .just some. I think the person in the article said it best. . .it's like swatting a fly with a sledgehammer. But I understand the thought behind not wanting extremist materials.

i think its ridiculous. people serving in prison need religion as much as any one of us, some may argue more-so. I don't care if they develop a faith in christianity or paganism, as long as it's something. I hope those 2 men win their case

I think it is the government going about it the wrong way. Books should be banned, not lists made. Now I am not a fan of banning any books period, but prisons are a bit different.
They would also modify their program by allowing additional texts in on approval, but that becomes more work and more money.

I don't think prisoners necessarily "need" religion. I don't think religion makes people virtuous, in fact, I think it's usually the contrary. But people have a right to freedom of religion and that includes having access to whatever religious books they want.

i'm undecided on this one, people fight because of religion but i think it's important for people to hang on to something they believe in...so i don't know

Hmm I have a bit of a different take on this. When you go to prison you lose your rights. You no longer have the right to make some decisions. Let's not forget that we are talking inside a prison. Outside of prison, anyone has a right to choose any religion, any books, any resources. In prison, you give up some rights.
I'm not sure I agree with the reason they give "to try and stop recruiting into religious groups due to terrorism" however I'll be bummed if these guys win the suit. When in prison you just don't have the same rights as someone outside of prison.

Yes, but they are also human beings. Regardless of what they did, they still should be able to have their basic rights. Religion is very important to some people. If you were in prison and your bible was taken away, how would that make you feel? I hope the guys win.

This is really really tough. While I do understand that "basic rights" should be given, the news article said that only some books were being removed. I don't have a list of those books. It's really hard for me to say "sure take my tax dollars to give the man who killed ____ a book"
(I'm glad to be back)
