Default Remedies for cancer

Many cancer patients use herbal remedies to ease side effects like nausea during therapy. I can't stress how important it is to let your doctor know what herbs you are taking! Recent studies show that the combination of chemotherapy and herbs can be toxic, actually doing more harm than good!A recently study found that a herb commonly used by breast cancer patients, called black cohosh, can be toxic when combined with chemotherapy drugs. Black cohosh is an herb used for centuries to alleviate the symptoms of menopause. It is commonly used by breast cancer patients who are also taking anti-estrogen drugs to ease hot flashes and other side effects. The findings have certainly raised questions about whether black cohsoh has the ability to treat cancer in conjunction with chemotherapy. However, there is too little research available.

Bottom line: Don't take herbs without consulting your doctor! What you don't know may hurt you!

I worked in a pharmacy for years and I think that what you are saying is very important. People seem to think that if a product is 'all natural' or considered a herbal remedy, it is perfectly safe. So untrue!! Look at guarana. It's simply a natural form of caffiene, but it affects the body in much the same way as commercial synthetic brands. Echinacea is another one that has to be used with care especially if someone has an auto-immune disease. The best bet is to consult a pharmacist or doctor before taking anything, natural or not. Even carrot juice can be toxic if taken in large quantities. Makes you think. Does anyone know of any other examples?

I think this is good advice. Cancer patients are often deluged with people who give well meant advice. Some natural remedies are good for some things, but with a life threatening illness, you should have all the facts in front of you and work in partnership with your doctor. And you are right Ann - not all natural remedies are safe. Look at St John's Wort. It is ok for some, but how many people understand they have to guard from too much sun with it? Also, if you have some types of depression or anxiety, it may actually make things worse.

to be honest i dont think there is any thing really that you can do only unless it is caught in the early stages people saying you should eat this and try that you are just giving false hope to people in desperate situations
