Returning Money
You go to the store. The cashier hands you too much change. You catch it. Do you return it or keep it?
I've done both. I usually will attempt to return it, but if he/she argues I keep it. In some instances, depending on store, I'll keep it and then drop it into one of the containers that collects money for the many non profits.
What do you do?

I return it. If he/she argues, or if I don't catch until after I've left, I pay it forward. Not only is returning it the honest thing to do but cashiers can really get in trouble and accused of stealing if their drawer is off.

I couldn't keep the money if I wanted to. I'd be ridden with too much guilt and wouldn't be able to enjoy it. I caught a bank teller's mistake of over depositing into my account and let her know. The next day I got a phone call thanking me for doing that for her. Her phone call was worth more than the money ever was.
My brother found several hundred dollars out by a gas pump and turned it into the police. He was broke too and jobless and really could have used the money and tried to justify it as a blessing. He too didn't feel right about keeping it. That evening he got a call that he was hired for a job.
If the Taco Bell drive through throws in an extra taco, I don't worry about it because I'm usually home by the time I notice and they'll just throw it out. I find our local place puts mistake orders as "extras" in customer's bags. Not sure if it's like a "thank you" or if they would rather rid of stuff that way then throwing it out.

When I receive change I never count the coins, just the bills. I would never even know if I recieved to much change in coins. If I a m given too many bills, however, I will try to return the extra money.
It is a rare event indeed when I am shopping by myself. I usually have at LEAST one of my children with me. What a great opportunity to teach your child by example.

Years ago, I was given $20 extra when I cashed my check. I knew it then, and didn't say a word about it. It didn't eat me up with guilt either.
I wouldn't do that now though...I'm a different person.

I'm with you there MissyChrissy. Back when I was a whole different person, I've done that.
Of course now, after having cashier jobs, and actually growing up-I would feel guilty about it. I'm also a very strong believer in karma. I've seen it too many times to not believe!
