Default Revlon rang up as "taxable item" so no ECB's?

I went to 3 CVS stores today trying to locate the Contours and finally found 1 at the second store & 2 at the third store. At the last store they had Revlon lipsticks, mascara, etc. on clearance so I picked up 4 of these items as I seemed to recall someone here saying they had used those & got the ECBs. I had a coupon $3 off 2 lip products. No problem using the coupon but the clerk rang the items up as Taxable Items so I guess I am out my ECB's for those?? I asked her about scanning them but she said they don't scan clearance items. Would it now make any difference if I called CS to ask about this? The total was more than what some are paying for the emery boards and those are working. I feel a bit cheated.
Another issue:
The second store I went to had a bunch of the clearance haircolors that actually were shades I could use. Usually they only have had blonde & I am a brunette. Anyway I was so excited since I had $2 coupons for them too! The shift supervisor walked by while I was looking at them so I nicely asked if they had any problem with coupons on those (shouldn't have asked but didn't want a problem at the register) and she said they don't take coupons on clearance. I showed her that some of the boxes had $1 coupons attached and she said well, they "could accept those." Now, what is the difference??? They were man. coupons just like the ones I had! I just didn't want to argue so I put them back. Then later I got to thinking about how I HAD used coupons on clearance deodorant, etc. at another CVS last week. Then at the last store today they took one for the clearance Revlon. I thought of calling CS about that also as I really would have liked to have had those haircolors!
It does seem that each store has it's own set of rules. I just wish they could all handle transactions the same!
