Just transferred from another store. Rite Aid only gives out gift certificates that have to be used all at once or you lose the balance. They also can't be used to pay for prescriptions.

Technically, you're allowed to purchase any amount (even 1 pill) on a prescription & with the right to purchase more or transfer the prescription. Depending on the med category, the balance of the script is good for either 6 months or 1 year.

So you could conceivably take your Rx anywhere, fill a partial amount & then ask RiteAid to transfer it.

The only exception would be some stronger 'triple pad' narcotics that only get 1 fill & no phone renewal.

Controlled substance (CS) prescriptions (C-3 thru C-5) can only be transferred once per federal law. There is also a limit on the number of times a CS Rx can be filled which is the original 1 plus 5 refills, if authorized by MD. If it is filled for less than the original quantity at any point (new or refill) it counts as one of the valid fills. Many times I've had customers get upset when they run out of valid refills on their CS Rx since it was filled for less than the original quantity for one reason or another and I'd have to call their MD for refill authorization.

Almost every day we'd have another pharmacy call to transfer a prescription that was dropped off to be filled out ours but never picked up. So in actuallity you could drop your script off at one pharmacy then call another pharmacy to have it transffered, then it is a transferred Rx. I just wouldn't suggest doing this with a controlled substance.

Wow, gift cards finally !!! So, i'm assuming the gift cards are able to be set for more than just the $20 Rite Aid offers with their own Rx coupons. I called corporate and complained about their system, when I used a $30 CVS coupon there as a competitor's coupon and only got a sad $20 certificate. They really weren't living up to their promise to match any competitor's offer.

I agree with your reply, but it's still refillable if not a 'triple pad' CS if as you said the pharmacy calls the MD (as most or all pharmacies would). I did also say 6 months on some Rx but didn't know (& accept you're correct) on the # of partial fills being a factor too. Does the same concept apply to non-CS that are good for 12 months (that they would require phone authorization after 12 partial or full fills even less than 12 months)? What about partial fills based not on Customer request but on the pharmacy not having the full amount available?

Your comment to simply drop it off at 1 pharmacy & immediately transfer it to enable use of a transfer coupon is an excellent idea!

Do you have to have the Rx number to transfer to another pharmacy? For instance, if you drop off a script at Wal-mart, they keep the script even if there are 4 other meds on there they're not filling. I know they enter them all into their computer. Can another pharmacy just call them up for the transfer information, eventhough the customer doesn't have an Rx number because the prescription has never been filled?

Yes it is still refillable, but sometimes it takes a few days or more, for MD offices to give refill authorizations.

Prescriptions for Non-CS are not subject to the same fill limits. These you can freely transfer as you need to based on your states transfer limits, which vary from state to state. Know your states laws before you start transferring your prescriptions around.

If a prescription is partially filled due to being out of stock the partial fill and remaining balance are considered 1 fill.

You do not need the Rx number to get an Rx transferred. Just give the new pharmacay the telephone number of the pharmacy, the name of the patient and what the medication is. The new pharmacy can transfer the prescription as long as it is not expired.
