I've been on one "road trip to Mexico" as well as one official trip (to do a Medical Mission work). On my road trip we went across the border for a wedding in the Mexican town of Acuna (across the border from Del Rio, TX). We were meeting Mexican people that we knew there but otherwise I don't think I would have felt very safe. When we went on our Mexican Mission trip the time when I fel the least safe was when we were in the border town area. We went across into Nuevo Laredo (which is across from Laredo, TX) and at the time there had been a lot of kidnappings there. I would not recommend it.
However, I loved going deeper into Mexico. We went to Monterey and to another town called Saltillo. I thought Monterey was a little too big for my tastes, but Saltillo was a nice good-sized (not too big) communtity. We really didn't get much time to do a lot of things outside of the mission work except eat at restaurants - but I loved that! We ate at a lot of different places (from taco stand on the side of the road to fancy places) and the best food I had down there the entire time was at the taco stand. We did go to a couple of different markets while I was there and that was fun. It was neat to interact in the culture that way.
