Unhappy School Crisis ...

My son has been playing up at school quite a lot this past week and a half. Just when I thought things were going well and that the new reward system was encouraging him to behave more better & more often.

Last week Brodie was suspended again!! I guess I should be grateful that this is the first time for this term. I cannot believe that this particular suspension began because Brodie was tapping a ruler on a table.

I know my child isn't perfect but I think the school needed to realise that on this particular day Brodie's meds (for ADHD and epilepsy) were taken late, thankfully I realised this and phone the school as soon as I got home from the morning school run and I got the school to give him his medications straight after I phoned. I don't think the teachers comprehend that it takes time for the ADHD meds to kick in and that they should've allowed for this when he went back into class.

Next week there are parent teacher interviews and I am making arrangements to talk to ALL of Brodie's teachers. I will certainly let them know about his medical situation and I hope that they will take into consideration that he isn't just one of the 'normal' kids that they have in their class.

On Tuesday of this week I got yet ANOTHER call from the school saying that Brodie had let off a fire extinguisher. To be honest I don't know why they told me it isn't like I could've prevented it or anything. They accused him of taking the pin out of the extinguisher and setting it off on purpose. Yet they were unable to tell me where the pin was after the incident. I mean if he took it out of the extinguisher shouldn't the pin be either in his possession or on the floor nearby? Like I said I know my son isn't perfect and there is a strong possibility that he did do this particular thing but they truly need to collect ALL the information.

Yesterday (Thursday) I had ANOTHER call from the school. This was about an hour after school began. I was told that Brodie was not following instructions and that I needed to collect him. Looks like to me that the Assistant Principal was just unable to discipline and/ or just didn't want to cope with him at all. I also noted that the Principal was away from the school and that the AP said he needed to consult with the Principal in regards to Brodie's recent behaviour.

Are they going backwards with their approach for him? I've done my hardest to make sure that they have all the information they need in regards to Brodie's health, medical conditions and abilities. I have even provided the school with NEW information and ideas on how to worh with Aspie kids. To he honest I don't think they have even looked at it yet or they may have tried some alternative tactics!

Sometimes I swear that the schools administrative staff as well as the other teachers for get that there are special needs kids in their school. I don't want to sound unreasonable and say that they shouldn't take the other childrens well being into account but they just don't get it with special needs kids. They forget the training (if they have done any) in regards to children with Asperger Syndrome or ADHD. Perhaps I am being too cynical but I don't think they consider disabilities if they cannot see them. I mean if Brodie was in a wheelchair they would be more accommodating since they can SEE that he is different.

I think I had beetter get off my soap box or I could go on ALL day!
