Wink Self-defense classes for women

Given the frightening percentage of sexual assaults that occur to females each year, I decided to learn Wing-Chun which is a chinese martial art developed especially for women. It's aim is to be defensive rather than offensive, giving you the ability to ward off a physical attack, and buy some time to get away. It was actually developed by a chinese nun (God knows what she thought she had to fend off!) but I found it to be an excellent means of protecting myself. I have also got my teenage daughter learning it, you never know when you might need it. And it's great for fitness too. Any martial art would be appropriate but this particular brand teaches women specifically how to deal with a man. My partner is very careful around me now!!!!

Default Karate -- the first weeks

A friend talked me into a karate class. I was skeptical because quite frankly I didn't really want to fight anyone. I soon learned that most of the class was dedicated to two things : 1) kata -- which is a series of steps you do by yourself which combine blocks and punches and 2) self-defense moves. The latter was wonderful. They showed us how to break free of holds -- someone choking you, someone grabbing onto your arm, etc. Desperation stuff. And how to get in a series of kicks, stomps and punches that even someone weak could use with good result. They always said the best defense was to run screaming if you had the chance. Do you buy into the just give in so you don't get hurt advice I've heard?

Default Self-defense and sexual abuse

One of the first things I recommend as a counselor of sexually abused women is to go to self-defense classes. Not only are the classes fun, but they certainly empower these women at a time in their life when they really need it. Of course, prevention is better than cure, and self-defense classes are a must for all women. In fact, they should be started in elementary school. Yes, I am a big fan!! And it's a healthy pastime too!

I've been looking into doing this myself. I think it's a great idea and a really good investment.
