All three of my children were born sucking their fingers or arm. My eldest was sucking her thumb in utero, my youngest daughter was sucking her middle and ring finger (go Longhorns!), and my son had a small blister on his wrist from sucking it prior to birth.
I never really bothered them about it because it was certainly easier than trying to keep up with a pacifier. Out of three, only the middle child required braces due to the sucking of her fingers causing her front teeth to move out of place.
I often take care of a 6 year old who has her blanket with her and sucks her thumb at night. It is a comforting thing for her and is not a reflection of poor parenting, so I would recommend leaving them alone.
As a parent of three adult children, I have learned to pick my battles and thumb-sucking is not one of the important "battles" we all have as parents.
Why do you feel the need to "wean them off"?
