Postnatal depression is such a debilitating problem for new mothers, and the biggest problem is a sense of failure and a feeling of having to keep up appearances. To have postnatal depression can often make you feel like you have failed as a mother, because, well, isn't everyone supposed to be good at being a mother?? No!!! Not when your hormones are out of balance and effectively controlling the way you feel. It's a terible illness and it's a pity that more doctors and midwives don't discuss it with pregnant mothers to warn both them and their partners of the signs to look out for. Early intervention is the way to go. And it certainly helps with the all-important mother-child bonding process.
