Sleeping on your side?
Normally I wouldn't ask something like this unless I was asking my doctor, but does anyone know how soon one should be sleeping on their side? I began as soon as I found out, but I sometimes roll over onto my back (even with the extra help of my new snoogle pillow) and it concerns me a bit. Does anyone else have trouble staying on their sides at night?

I do... I always wake up on my belly... I think as long as it doesn't hurt you're okay!

My dr said he wasnt concerned with me sleeping on my back until the third tri. I always sleep on my tummy but immediatly after finding out I was pregnant. I think its ok to sleep on your back until the weight of the baby becomes a problem but to be honest with you I could try my hardest to sleep on my side but would always wake up on my back. If I did wake up on my back I would just roll back to my side. The only thing that really kept me on my side was spooning with DH. I would lay on the side of the bed that we have up against a wall and would get as close to the edge as I felt safe and then DH would cuddle up next to me.

I try to stay on my left side but I find my hip tends to hurt after awhile... I switch back and forth between left and right during the night, and if I wake on my back, I just switch back to my side.

In one of my pregnant books it actually adresses that question. I think it's around 20 weeks you are supposed to stop sleeping on your back (if you can, obviously we are not really in control of how we end up) around 20 weeks because it restricts oxygen to the uterus because of the weight of laying that way (or something to that general effect). I did at first have problems staying on my side, now it's not really an issue. My side is the only comfortable way to sleep now, lol....

I'm having this issue too. My hips fall asleep and start to hurt when I sleep on my side. Ugh! I even have a pillow between my knees. Are there any good sleeping pillows or cushions that can help? Good topic!

I have found with my pregnancies (this is number 3 now) it's been ok. I was worried, but I would always let my body be my guide. If there were no problems, I always continued to sleep that way. It was only once my son (2nd preg) was lying transverse, that it was recommended to me to start sleeping on my left side, and that got him in the proper position. So my advice is, just listen to your body and your health professional

i had atheory the whole time i was pg (wrong or not, i still had a healthy baby) ---- sleep how you're comfy. i haven't read ALL the research, but i'm pretty sure sleeping on your back doesn't completly 100% block the nutrients to the baby. i say -- save the sleep deprivatioin for when bubs gets here. i think pregnancy books are made to make you worry.
