Default Smoke Detectors

Why is it that when the batteries in smoke detectors give out, it's always the middle of the night?

We moved into this house in February. In April, one of the batteries died, of course in the middle of the night. I should have changed all batteries at that time, but I kept putting it off.

Now, last night, about 3:30 am. one of the batteries, the one in my room actually died and beeped. I could not fall back asleep after that.

So, today, I will buy all new batteries and change them all !!!

Dh is a fireman so we do them twice a year. We usually chnage them when we have to move our clocks frwd and backwards. It stops those middle of the night beep'ings

Lessly that's a good idea! I'll have to remember that.

We have a smoke detector/carbon monoxide detector and right after we moved in the CO monitor went off. I freaked! We called 911 and they came out and checked everything. We had to stay the night in a hotel. The kicker was...the stupid thing was broken! They suggested getting a digital on that plugs into the wall so you can see a readout on CO levels. It would randomly go off. I remember waking up on more than one occasion thinking we were all going to die cause the stupid alarm was going off. Needless to say, we don't use that one anymore.

My grandmother's co detector used to go off every time a car drove by her house. She was able to set the sensitivity on it so it stopped doing that.

My dh had co poisoning before (not from our house) so I highly recommend you get a working one in your house asap. You don't want to go through what my dh did.

My smoke detector just started going off when the bathroom door opened right after a shower. It's been up there for years, so I'm thinking it's wearing out. Probably time to buy a new one.

What I'd really like to get are those heat detectors that wind up. No more batteries

We had the beeping when my son was just a few weeks old. It went on for DAYS. The kids and I were going nuts. I thought the baby was going to end up with a nervous tic from it. My husband changed the batteries in EVERY smoke detector in our house (10 of them). The beeping continued. The next night, he cleaned every single detector, since the company told us they may be dirty. The beeping continued. He disconnected every detector. The beeping continued. He shut off the breakers, so there was no power to them. The beeping continued. We were starting to freak out. It was like something out of a horror flick. Then on like the fourth day, he disconnected the carbon monoxide detector and the beeping stopped. We felt like prize idiots!

Our house was brand new and we called our contractor and they came out and replaced the CO monitor, so we have one that works. I should have mentioned that
