Default So hypocritical!!

So right now I'm watching a show on VH1 about stars who are super thin, called "Shockingly Thin Hollywood". The show features stars who have always been super thin, as well as those who were "normal" but have lost a lot of weight for some reason or another. I'm not sure what the point of the show is.... I'm not sure if they are defending stars (men, women, young, old) who are super thin, or if they are airing an episode like this as a way to inform people how unrealistic the super thinness is.

Anyway, by the end of the episode they talk about the pressure for everyone to be so thin, and hollywood has a lot to do with it. They mention that thin will always be in, and that probably won't ever change, no matter what. However, what really gets to me are the commercials during this episode. During every single commercial break there are at least 3 commercials that are for diet pills, exercise equiptment, exercise tapes, etc. It was so annoying, and it seemed hypocritical!

Thanks for letting me vent. At first I was going to post this in the weight loss forum, but I decided it's not really about weight loss, rather just a vent about our reactions toward it. (I think??)! LoL!

i agree completely (although i havent seen the show, but i know if it). it is a shame that society has unrealistic expectations on what "beautiful" is, and young people (boys and girls) are getting a warped sense of how they "should" look.

on a side note: i understand that the "point" of these shows is supposed to be to raise awareness of how drastic the measures to be thin can be, but to someone that is impressionable (young or old, male or female), these shows can be learning tools on HOW to get to the unreasonable (and for some people unhealthy) weights. When i was an early teen i saw a movie on tv about a girl who was bulimic. i had been uncomfortable with my weight for a while and had a tendency to not eat to lose weight (skip meals, take only nibbles when i did eat). after seeing this movie, i LEARNED that you could eat then throw up and in my mind it was the best of both worlds. that lead to an eating disorder that consumed my life for many years. fortunately i never had to go so bad as to be hospitalized (i saw how it tore my parents to pieces and agreed to outpatient therapy). even to this day, my relationship with food is not the healthiest, but it is the best it has ever been. i take responsibility for my actions, the movie didnt "make" me bulimic (i had tendencies towards eating disorders before hand), but it did give me ideas on how to get around being found out. all this from a movie that was supposed to educate the public on eating disorders! i guess what i am saying is that sometimes these shows that are supposed to raise awareness can backfire.

phew...sorry for the novel...

I was reading a magazine article - the average American woman is size 14. That is not thin.

No wonder American women have issues with weight. Models being super skinny and clothing that is supposed to fit that model, not the average woman buying clothing.

I am proud to say that I am a size 11. I am not thin or obese. I am comfortable. I used to be really tiny and when I got my stuff together after making a ton of wrong decisions I got heavy. I am not where I thought I would be but am happy with my weight. The average woman doesnt look good pencil thin. I think that women are meant to have curves and look different. There is a difference between being healthy and fit than being anorexic
