Default Soap Scum & Mildew

How do you get rid of these? I've tried "The Works" but am afraid to use it while being pregnant. The fumes really get to me when I'm not. I just cannot stand to look at my shower door any more. It's glass and has a heavy coating of soap scum on it. We have some mildew spots in the shower stall as well. Unfortunately the only ventilation either of my bathrooms has is to open the window. My mother once told me about a mixture of baking soda or powder mixed with some other common kitchen item to make a paste to "paint" onto mildew and soap scum surfaces that will take it all away without fumes or need to ventilate. Just paint it on, wait about an hour and wipe it off with a wet rag.

Has anyone ever heard of this or has a homemade cleaning recipe for this problem?
