Yes . . . they were, I even took the back roads to keep them from finding me. I really needed to succeed. Especially after my daily protests had fallen on deaf ears. My father had a very strong sense of duty to care for my cousins after his brother died. But I felt (and still feel) that his duty to his own son should come first.
As a footnote: although my cousin was 'banished' to another relative, and I've never seen him since; his sister lived with us all through school. She and I are three months apart in age and even told people we were twins. We still call each other several times a month . . . over 50 years later.
