Default Spit-up Question

Hi,
Recently my 3 month old starting spitting-up more than he has in the past and I was wondering if reflux can develop now, or is he just overeating? He doesn't seem to be overeating b/c if I take away the bottle to soon he "screams" at me (not really screaming, more a not so happy cry) He eats about 5-6 oz. every 4 hours and only takes one bottle overnight, so he's eating approx. 5 bottles a day and sleeps from 8:00 pm to 3:00ish am and then 3:30 to 7:30. He put himself on this schedule and actually seems alot happier Sleeping and eating this way, except for the spit-up. Thanks for the help.

Welcome Jaime!!
Maybe he is drinking too fast? Try switching to a different bottle, or a different nipple. And some babies just spit up alot! My daughter spit up until she was on cereal and baby food- she even would spit up baby food at first!

Welcome to the board!

Is he a good burper/bubbler?

I'm thinking that other Moms can also share their good advise w/ you too.

I have no problems getting him to burp. Someone suggested trying the Enfamil A.R. or adding a little rice cereal to the bottle, not sure that I want to do that though, since this is a fairly new thing, him spitting up like this, until I speak with his dr.

I don't recommend giving rice in a bottle. First of all, rice cereal is essentially empty calories. so when you do that you're replacing hte nutrients baby needs from the formula with rice cereal. It can also be a choking hazard. The AAP doesn't recommend it either.

It is generally better if you let babies regulate their intake just like they would if they were breastfeeding so if he's letting you know that taking the bottle away doesn't make him happy, he probably wants more. What you're feeding him doesn't seem out of the ordinary for his age either.

Will he take a different type of nipple? Maybe he's just getting the milk a little too fast? Definitely mention it to your pedi at your next visit. . .while GERD is one option there are other possibilities too. My dd spit up and did not have GERD. . .she just spit. There was a reason but we didn't find out until forever.

I tried something new that my MIL suggested, instead of warming the bottles, just keep them room temp or slightly cool and it seems to have worked all day today : ) But I still plan on speaking with the pedi. Thanks for the info.
