Step-parent Adoption
Please help me, I was born in Eureka, CA in 1960. When I was 2 my parents divorced, my mom remarried when I was 4. When I was about 6 or 7 my Mom told my biological dad that she would let him off the $900 in back child support if he would sign papers to let my step father adopt me, he agreed and I was adopted. My mom took the hospital birth certificate and erased my last name and wrote my new dad's last name in, (back in the 1960's you could get away with this), changed my name at school and so on. I got my drivers licence under this name, married and divorced 2 times under this name. I lived in Oklahoma and have always had an Oklahoma drivers licence, well I moved to Georgia and went down to change my licence over and was told I also needed a certified copy of my birth certificate and all marriage and divorce decrees to prove I was me. I sent to California for my birth certificate and they sent me my original birth record not the one I was adopted to. So I tried to use it and they would not accept it because of the last name was different from any thing I have. The county recorder said there was no birth record under the adopted name and I would need a court order to check adoption records, I can not afford this, years ago my mom showed me a copy of my adoption decree so I know it happened. My mom and dad are now deceased and I don't know where she put it. I thought that an adoption sealed your original birth certificate with your new name and parent. Could the court recorder just filed the adoption away and fogot to seal it and it is in their records but I can't have it taken care of without a court order. The laws on things now are so strict I am stuck and can't get an Georgia licence and can't use my Oklahoma one for much longer. Does anyone know what to do in this case, I would like to have my birth certificate with the right name on it!! Thank you, Vicki
