Default Suggestion: Frugal Living

I'd like a "Frugal Living" thread in the DAGG community section. Some place where people can list there "tricks" to saving money -- besides coupons (like the home-made cleaners recipes, and stuff like that.)

One of my most absurd is to make sure I go to the bathroom right before I leave work -- that way I'm using their t.p. instead of mine.

Just a suggestion ...

My mother saved on laundry by having all us kids (five in all) wear our clothes twice before throwing them in the hamper. I'm sure exceptions were made if an article was visibly soiled.

Personally, I reuse my thermos mug for ice water multiples times before washing. Sure saves on dishwashing soap and water.

the one about going to the bathroom before leaving work is funny, I have never heard that one before. I like to read frugal tips, I know its really easy for me to use too much of something just because I have a ton of it that I got cheap. I am bad at dishwasher detergent because it seems like I had years and years of it now I am down to my last 10 boxes and I do 2 complete loads of dishes a day with 3 kids. I might have to (gasp) buy some in the future (with coupons of course). Also soap powder I know I use too much because I get it so cheap. I have a ton of paper towels thanks to Kmart and now I use them for everything, and go through a roll everyday or two and before when I had to pay something for them a roll would last a week or longer but now that i got them free its very easy to use them for everything. Coupons has made me less frugal because I have so much of stuff and its really a bad habit to have.

I read "The Complete Tightwad Gazette" cover to cover. It was really wonderful, eye opening, and a certain must read for anyone interested in frugality. It took me a month to read the whole thing.
Aftr reading that, I began doing double coupons at Ralphs, then they closed every Ralphs in my area. I now do pharmacy deals, Target deals, anything I can get FAR through Fatwallet, and it is really making a big difference in our lives. Because we have more, we shop less, use less gas, stay home more. The rebate checks are just starting to come in from doing all the FAR deals I could for the past 3 months. I now get money from my husband each week, plus the rebate checks, and my bank account has increased. And, the more items I check off my list, the fewer and fewer things I need, so the more I can save.

I save whats left of a candle after the wick is gone (mostly the glade 3n1 candles) to use in the tart burners.

I love a good deal always.

I try to purchase all my childrens clothes off season. Only buy on great sale or deep clearance items.
Garage Sale shopping is a passion in the summer months. I get many toys, movies and books for my children this way. When they are done with them I sell them back at my own garage sale - sometimes making money.
I purchase clothes on deep clearance and garage sales and resale them at clothing stores or school clothing sales. Can make up to 75-100% profit.

Practicality at its finest.

Think of the energy savings.

Back on topic, I think this would work as either a subforum by itself, or worse comes to worse, have a mod move this under everyday life. It's not couponing (couponing is actually a subset of frugal living) but I think this kind of forum could handle a subforum like this. It fits right in.

I really liked this book. It's too bad new editions aren't being printed anymore.
