Default Switching to cloth!!!!! :)

OK, so I am finally finally switching to cloth diapers.
Too late for poor Tiffy, who is working on potty training.
But, now for Jessica......
I have about a dozen or 2 of the prefolds.....and I bought a Thirsties diaper cover. And I bought one Thirsties all in one. I also bought some bamboo wipes.
I know this isn't enough, but I wanted to start with a few, see if I like them and maybe buy some other brands....fitted ones, or other brands of aio......
I have never used a cd. and I am so freaked out about starting. Mainly cuz I don't know how I am going to wash them.....don't they need special detergent???? What do you use??? I have All free and clear....it supposedly has no predervatives, no enzymes..blahblah blah. but is it any good? Would you use it or buy something else?
I also am worried cuz we have no hot water hooked up to the washer, only cold. Is that ok????? I don't want to contaminate the washer. How many washes do they need?
Help!!!!
Thank you so much for any help and suggestions!!!! Also what brands do you like?

with what we use, i don't really have to worry about the washing part but i think you're supposed to use borax (the powder stuff) & no softener. kara will know though!

You can use the Free and Clear detergent...if you already use it and like it you'll probably like it equally with the diapers. I also use a little borax or washing soda in each load and rinse with white vinager because it makes them softer...If you find they aren't coming out white enough or if they get to be stinky you can hang them in the sun and it'll get rid of all the smell and make them white. I've never had to do that though. You can use cold water but depending on the prefolds (I bought unbleached) you may have to boil them first....The AIO and covers usually do better if you don't use hot water anyway

If you think your washer is dirty you can run a load of whites with bleach (if that makes you feel better) or just use white vingar...its supposed to kill the bacteria. I'm gonna say stuff you already know I'm sure..... Don't use bleach on them, no fabric softner, no biz or whitener, or brighteners and usually no scent is best but if you really need or want scent you can add a few drops of essential oil to the wash or dry cycle...to add to the dryer just put it on a wash cloth and throw it in with the rest of the diapers. HTH

Thanks!!!!
As far as adding white vinegar to the rinse, (stupid question, but...) do you have to listen to the washer and when it is on rinse then add the white vinegar? Or do you put it in when you start the wash? Do you have to run them through more than one time?

I actually do a regular wash and a extra rinse but that's only because I forget very easy that I am washing laundry!! So I put it in the extra rinse but you can put it in the first rinse. Whatever detergent you use make sure it rinses out completely by the end and if it doesn't then you should use less...They have those size cup things all wrong...you usually don't need nearly as much as they say you do!

i have no help! maybe if you wash them, they'll shrink a tad in the dryer? i have a hard time with getting that whole pad to fit in the liner, there's no room for it to slide. there's a ton of tips & faqs on the gdiapers site... not sure if that'll help or not.

i think i have it figured out...i was just putting it in there folded the way it comes in the pack, but i started un-folding it, then folding one side halfway down...now it fits perfect and gives some more protection in the front
