Default symptoms and concerns

I am concerned about a 6 1/2 yr old. Given the seriousness, I am looking for informal help before any escalation. What would be the symptoms if a child were given insulin? (He is not diabetic but his mother is). Aside from possible insulin, is there anything (diet, lifestyle, etc) that could make a child become diabetic?
Rather than relate observations of the child, I am wondering if anyone could give me any general ideas.
The situation has details I am purposely leaving out and while many will simply say "go to the authorities" it is not possible. It may even make the situation worse for the child if suspicions are incorrect.

a genetic predisposition to diabetes, a defect or injury to the pancreas, being overweight, too many carbs and sugars that overload the pancreas and it can not make enough insulin to process the glucose in the body not enough exercise and high cholesterol can all lead to diabetes
