Taxi or Subway
For those of you who have travelled with your family in NY, did you take the subway or take taxis during your trip? The subway seems like the most cost effective trip, but with a family of four, it may be easier to try and get taxis. What did you do?

For someone not used to the city, I would recommend a cab. It'e easy to get confused by the subway system if you're not sure of where you're going.

it really depends on your levels of patience and where you are going. Cab rides can take more time. And the rates are getting steep. The subway is getting expensive too but it will always be a lot cheaper. Of course, most cabs don't smell of urine...

I just got back from NY and we took the Subway most of the time. My hubby's sister lives there and she showed us around a little bit at first, but even if she hadn't we would have been able to figure it out with a little bit of patience. We took a cab a few times (it was especially nice when our feet were tired). The other thing is that once you get to a subway or get off you still have to find your way around a little bit (with some walking).

The subway is not that complicated, and it has gotten easier in the past few years with clean up and routing that makes better sense. It used to be several different companies, and while it has been city run for years, the routes were in place like it was all still separate.
If there is a large group of you and you have one or two destinations in mind, a cab is fine. But if you really want to see the city, use public transportation, subway and busses. It is much more efficient, more safe, and you really get to see NYC.
Since 911, whenever we go in, I always drive and park the car in a midtown garage. Then we take trains and busses to whatever we have to do. I want the option of having several ways to get back across the bridge, including my feet, if necessary. I was very happy to have my car available the day of the blackout several years ago - getting a bus out would have taken us much longer and been much more uncomfortable. NYC driving is crazy, but in a crisis, people usually simmer down and cooperate in traffic.

I've been to New York a few times recently, once with my daughter, and she and I both loved the subway. If nothing else, it's interesting, and relatively cheap, and not that hard to figure out. We got on one going the wrong way once for quite a while, but it was no big deal. You just catch the next one going the opposite direction.

Subways Cabbies are overpriced and your kids will love the trains, and there are plenty of people who will tell you which train goes where if you ask politely. I miss NYC ..

I take the kids on the train all the time by myself. You can download a map from the internet which can help plan for trips. The subways are not hard at all to figure out.

Another vote for subway. We visited NYC last spring and took the subway everywhere. My kids loved the subway!

If you want to be like a real NY'er during your stay you will take the subway. There's a Metrocard deal that's $7.50 for an unlimited day of bus and subway transportation. If you go for a single ride Metrocard you pay $2 per fare, but you can transfer for free from subway to bus, or from bus to subway. The free transfer has to be used within two hours.
Use reasonable caution when riding the subways, but don't be afraid because they're safe. They merely look scary but that's part of the fun of NY.
