New York is a pretty expensive city, and I found both subway and cabs to be quite expensive! I mostly traveled by subway but I had friends to explain me how to get to places. If you do choose subway i would get the day card like another user has already mentioned. If you are going to a specific place and know before hand that it is complicated to find or that the subway doesn't go very near, just take a cab.
