Default The Golden Compass

I was wondering if anyone has heard of this movie? It is targeting children and I was wondering what christians think of it.

It is a watered down atheist movie. I quote the author of the books; he said in a 2003 interview that "My books are about killing God."

Here is the think from snopes.com are you as a christian concerned about this? I understand that people are allowed to have their own views but this author hated "God" and is targeting children and wants them to hate God too.

What are your views?

Yes. . .and no. I won't let my kids see it but we won't let our kids see a lot of things that people are letting their kids see. I won't let them see it until they are much older though, in large part bc of the demonology in it. He has a right to spread his message just like I do. So no I won't watch it, but I won't contemplate it long either.

We don't let our kids watch 98% of what is out there and this would certainly fall into the category. Doesn't make sense to me anyway. If he's athiest, why would he hate God? Doesn't he just believe He doesn't exist??

This movie looks pretty intense. I don't think the demon thing is quite the same understanding that most people have of demons. But I have not read the books. I don't think it will be high on our list.

Default The Golden Compass

I don't know about you but I saw the ads for the movie The Golden Compass and thought they looked pretty good. But after reading an article about the author and his intent to convince children that Christianity and an afterlife are a myth my family won't be seeing it. In one interview the author was quoted saying, "My books are about killing God." The movie is based on the first book in the series. In the third book the characters actually kill God. The author is an avowed athiest who hates the works of C.S. Lewis and his series the Chronicles of Narnia. His series is in direct contrast to the Narnia series and tries to disprove and convince children of the opposite things that Lewis did.

Default Golden Compass----- Don't be fooled!!

Golden Compass is the first movie of a trilogy which is being released on December 7th, 2007. The author of the book that the movie is based on has high hopes of trying to pass this first of three movies as a family film, He hopes to lure young children into falling in love with the main characters, a young boy and girl, and then have our influencial children wanting to follow the story as it progresses to the second and third movies. By then he hopes that the following will be a large portion of America's younger generation, spurred on from the sales of his books and DVD's and other "Golden "Compass" related merchandise. In the third and final segment, the young boy and girl actually KILL GOD, allowing them the freedom to do "Whatever we want". The whole concept goes against all Christian teachings. There's a Bible verse that claims that Satan will often appear as a "Wolf, wearing Sheep's clothing". This movie is being hyped as a movie to take your kids to. Better advice? Stay AWAY if you Love your kids. There's enough junk and garbage they are exposed to now. This movie is worse!!

Well, I am not Christian, but The Chronicles of Narnia was my all time favorite series as a kid. I think I spent one summer just reading that series over and over. It didn't turn me into a Christian.

I watched many movies about Christianity, read the Bible, went to Sunday School, had more Christian children's books than you could shake a stick at, and still, I didn't become Christian.

So how would one book series or movie series turn kids into atheists or agnostics? I would think if your family is Christian, you raise your children to be Christian, and your children understand that stories are sometimes things you agree with and sometimes they are not, but can be entertaining and educational nonetheless, then where is the harm?

Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention!! I have heard some of the anti-Christian rumblings surrounding this movie and I had been meaning to look into it because my two older children have expressed an interest in seeing it. We saw the trailer for it when we took the kids to see A Bee Movie.

As a Christian, the quotes on snopes.com about killing God just chill me to the core. There is no way any of my children will be watching this movie or reading any of the books. This is not the sort of message I want them exposed to, they are young and their minds are so impressionable. I agree with twinzplus3, he has a right to spread this message if that is what he wants to do, but I also think that they should be a little more up front about exactly what they are spreading.

I refused to go and see this film because I read the book and was appalled and would not read another of his books. If our childen had been young I would not have let them go and see it.
