Default Ugh!! I want to cry

I took my son to the dentist today. I started crying in the middle of him explaining my son's problem. He has to stop sucking his thumb. That I knew, but didnt think it was this severe. If he doesnt stop, his jaw will be permanently the way it is. I think it looks fine. I dont see anything wrong, but Im not a dentist. The gunk along his gum line are cavities. His teeth came in that way. He said its one of the severe cases he's seen. DH and I brush his teeth two-three times a day. How is this possible. To get him to stop sucking his thumb I put his sister's (new/unused)sock around his arm and use packing tape to attach it to his shirt, so he cant pull it off. I feel horrible. The first 10 minutes he was following DH around the house begging him to take it off. Its breaking my heart, but what else can I do?? I was sitting on the couch with him and he was trying to put his thumb in his mouth. The dentist said to try this bitter spray on his thumb, but since he seems like an agressive thumbsucker it may not work. I dont mind using the sock around the house, but I cant take him out like that. I feel like a horrible mom as it is, that woul make it worse. Sorry - needed to vent.
