Default Umbilical cord - need advice

SO this morning when I went to change Elliott has umbilical cord stump was starting to fall off...it's still attached in one little place. Now the thing that has me worried is it looks like it's infected underneath where the stump was. It's all green and gunky. It doesn't have a bad smell or anything. I just can't remember from dd's what hers looked like when it fell off. Do you think this has reason to be concern about?? If so should I take him to the doc??

Green and gunky is probably fine. I've had 5 very different looking umbilical cords ranging from green and gunky to all else and no one had an infection. Although I will say I subscribe to the better safe than sorry theory--if you're worried. . .call your doctor.

I called our Healthlink toll free number (a thing our province has set up if you have questions) and they said as long as it didnt' have a foul smell just keep it clean with water and lots of air time and it should be better in a couple of days. So hopefully. My mom's coming tomorrow and she's a nurse so I'll have her look at it and see what she thinks. Thanks guys!!

That's good that you checked. DD's belly button was a little green and gunky after the cord fell off. We just let it airdry all time. I had read that the result is the same whether or not you use alcohol on the stump, so we decided not to. Her's ended up falling off within a couple of days and was fine.

i thought sean's umbilical cord was infected when his fell off. it was white in color and gooey too. by phone they said not to worry and a few days later when i took him to the doctor she rubbed alcohol on it, and after that it was fine.

i would call and see what they say.

If it is green gunky, I'd wipe it with alcohol too.

Won't be long before it falls off.

Naomi's just fell off today and there wasn't anything green like that - I would just clean it up well and keep an eye on it.
