Smile Updated: Non Stress Test

Have any of you had to do non stress tests? I am at 32 weeks and because I am considered "high risk" with the twins they want me to do a non stress test 2 times a week. The Dr. said it is their standard procedure, but what happens if I don't pass one of the tests? Would they have to take the babies? I really want to make it to 38+ weeks. I just wanted to see what other people have gone through.

An update - both babies are estimated to be over 4 pounds each. Unfortunatly Baby A (boy) is still breech. The doctor said if he does not turn with in 4 more weeks then they will schedule me for a c-section. The Dr. does not think he is going to be able to turn because I am so short and they are out of room Baby B (girl) is head down, but she is much higher up.

Everything is going great though. My blood pressure is still average (120 over 70) and I still have some swelling. The Dr. thinks I will have no problem making it to 38 weeks Now I am just worried about the non stress tests!

You have heard me say this before but I'll say it again: you need to be prepared, each time you go in, that they might deliver the babies. So go ahead and pack your hospital bags.

With that said, my babies did well with their NST's and yours probably will too. You can also look at it as a means to help you and your doctor make a good decision as to when to have those babies. NST's give you good diagnostic information that will help you know whether or not you should carry full term. But, you probably will.

Yes, if it doesn't go well, they will take the babies and depending on how not well and what your facilities are, they will do it right then and there. I don't think doctors will perform an external version on twins when they're not lying the same way. IME, both personally and in talking with others, it very often seems to me that there are reasons why the baby won't turn that make you glad in the end you had the c/s. The cord could be wrapped. . .etc. For twins, I wouldn't worry about a c/s honestly. It's very often the best course of action.

However, the best thing you can do is just concentrate on keeping the babies in. Rest as needed and don't try to do too much.

Thank you everyone. I guess it is not good that I am stressing about the NST!!!

I do have everything ready for the babies. The cribs are up. Their clothes and blankets are washed and put away. I also have my bag ready for the hospital. I just hope I don't have to use it yet!!

My first NST is Feb. 4. I'll only be at 34 weeks so I hope it is a good test. I want them to bake a little longer than that.

Chances are good that it will be just fine. Has anyone said anything about a biophysical profile yet? You shouldn't be shocked if they want to do that either. That's just an extra sonogram. (Well, there's more to it than that. . .)

I actually found the NST kind of relaxing . You have to sit there for at least 20 minutes. . .probably longer. And so bring a book!

I had to go for NST twice a week starting at 32 weeks with my second son. It's just a precaution and a way for them to monitor the babies. I actually used to look forward to it because I could sit there and listed to the babies. They did tell me to make sure and bring a packed bag to ever visit though. They ended up inducing me at 37 weeks. Good luck, I'm sure everything will be fine.

No, they have not mentioned a biophysical profile.. I am not sure what that is. I have to do the NST at the hospital because of twins. My Dr. office is not equipped to monitor multiples.

Thanks for suggesting the book. I did not think to bring that. These may be my last chances to read for a very long time

Hopefully the babies will respond well. I just want to have nice healthy babies and avoid the NICU. All the doctors in my group feel if I make it to at least 36 weeks the babies will be fine. That is just 3 more weeks so hopefully everything will be fine till at least that point.

I am going to one of our main hospitals here in Pittsburgh so if something goes wrong I will be in good hands. That helps put me at ease.

Don't be surprised if they do both. . .An NST is just when they strap monitors onto your belly to hear the babies heart rates and fetal movements. However, every couple of appointments, they also wanted to do a more detailed examination which essentially would include a sonogram. They're looking for specific measurements, heart rate function, positioning etc. Most doc's offices would not be prepared to do an NST but some birthing centers might. . .just kind of depends on where you are.

Yes, generally after 34/35 weeks, they are considered take home babies. You're doing well to have made it this far. Keep thinking in terms of 38 or more weeks though!

Val, thanks for the heads up on what they might do. I hope they do as many tests as they can while I am there to make sure the babies are ok. I am hoping that they are at least 5-6 lbs each. Right now they are guessing that they are a little over 4 lbs. each.

My goal is 38 weeks. That will be the 1st week of March. My sister's b-day is March 2nd so she is hoping for that day
