Default Vacation with Grandparents

Family vacations with grandparents is awesome!
This past summer my husband and I went with our 10-year-old son and my parents to my dad's homeplace in Pennsylvania. (We live in GA.) My dad is a history buff and my son just hung on my dad's every word when we went to visit historic sites like George Washington's Fort Necessity and Indian mounds around the Fort Hill / Somerset area.
We are homeschooling and studying early American history and my son is vividly retelling stories that my dad told him along with the information provided by staff at these locations.
My son has a picture in his mind now of what the area looks like, what conditions might have exisited, and has a better understanding of what our country's founding fathers endured.
Not only that but wonderful memories with his "Papa"
Anyone else have ideas for great destinations with kids?

Default Learning Vacations

I have to agree with you on vacations with grandparents. My husband and I really enjoy traveling with his parents. They enjoy those National Geographic/History Channel sort of vacations like we do so it is always a good time. I'm actually looking forward to more of these vacations as my son grows. There is an added bonus for me & my husband too - Gramma & Grampa love to have their grandchildren stay in their hotel rooms with them!

My family never took "learning" vacations, and my parents still aren't the least bit interested, but I think fun vacations where you can learn something new are the best ones of all.

I really am lucky to have such a good relationship with my in-laws. I'm actually waiting for them to arrive now! They are driving out to visit with me and my son over Thanksgiving. I look at it as a 10-day vacation from being a single parent 24/7. Now there will be 3 of us and I won't be outnumbered anymore!

Default Ideas for making excursions to museums or historical sites more engaging for your gra

1. Realize that you may need to spend just a short time in each area. If your grandchild seems interested stay longer, if not move on quickly.

2. Before you go, make a list of things for the children to look for (number of steps, the colors in a specific painting, number of clocks, etc.). Then they will be challenged to find all the answers.

3. Talk about the time period of the place you’re visiting and have them think about what the children were like, what they wore, and what toys they played with.

4. Choose places to visit that have a child’s room and have them compare it to their room.

5. Be sure to get a brochure of the site or museum you visit and when you get home, make a game similar to Monopoly. Create a simple game board by cutting out pictures and gluing them in a circle on paper. You could also play a guessing game like “I’m thinking of….” If you have two brochures you can cut out duplicate pictures and make a matching game.

6. When you arrive home have you child write about their favorite thing and draw a picture.

7. Take a photo of you and your grandchild, glue on a paper and each of you write about the visit. You could put it in an inexpensive frame as a keepsake.

8. If your grandchild is not with you when you visit a special place, send then a photo of you by something that you found interesting . Write them a note telling them why you found it interesting.

We took our 4 year old daughter and about 11 other nieces and nephews to Legoland in Carlsbad CA which is about a 2 hour drive from our home in Burbank, CA. My dad and stepmom (the grand parents) decided to make the drive down (also from the LA area) and spend the day with all their grand kids. The kids had a blast however; it seemed to be kind of a bust for the grand parents. They were walking kind of slow and falling behind and the only ones who were staying back with them were my wife and I. It was very tiring and hot for them and they didn't unfortunately get to see much of their grand kids who were busy on the rides, etc. Oh well, live and learn!

i COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS. Vacation with grand parents is a great feeling specially when you are old enough to understand their feelings. Me and my family also spend time with my grandparents and its fun to watch my dad becoming a son to my grandpa
