Default Varicella (or chicken pox) vaccine

As with every vaccine, there are pros and cons to consider, and with most the pros win. But with this one, it can go entirely either way. I honestly don't know which way to go even after the research I have done. I'm hoping some opinions from other parents might help. Thanks! Here's an article found at Baby Center about the immunization:

I'm not sure yet about this one. I have known so many kids who had the vaccine and still got the chicken pox anyways, BUT they did only get a very mild case, so I could go either way on this one. I remember having the chicken pox when I was little and it was pretty miserable. I plan on discussing it with my dh and my pediatrician before making a decision when the time comes to do so.

Just to throw this out there...Are there any other immunizations you plan not to get, or hold off and why?

I discussed this with DH the other day and Until they have a vaccine that will last a life time we would rather Aiden not get it. We have also looked it up in med Journals and such...and Mike got info from work (he's an RN). Though if Aiden hasn't gotten chicken pox before 10 we will give it to him as CP causes tons of complications if boys/men get it later in life. We are not anti-immunization we just think they need to make a shot that lasts a lifetime

I have heard of parents purposefully bringing their child around another child who has chicken pox, in the hopes that their child will come down with it. Once they get it, they are immune for a lifetime (most cases), so the parents want to get it over with that way. Did you or do you plan to do this?

We are just waiting and seeing if he gets it. Besides...if a child is already showing signs of CP "blisters" he/she is no longer contagious(sp?) the only time they are is when they show no signs or symptoms of the virus

It's a common mis-conception people have that if a kid is showing sympt. of the CP virus that they are contagious.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but can you show some sites for this? Because from everything I have looked up and read you continue to be contagious until the blisters crust. You do start to be contagious before the blisters show, however.

NO WAY. I can understand being fearful of meningitis or polio and wanting to vax... but chicken pox? Gimmie a freakin' break. Scam, scam, scam. Just like the flu vax. All about the Benjamins...

Here's a quote from 909shot, a VERY good site. Very balanced and well thought out. They are not anti-vax, but they are for education and safety in vaccine use.
Chickenpox and Chickenpox Vaccine
From that site:
What is Chickenpox Vaccine?

The Varicella Zoster (chickenpox) vaccine is made from the Oka/Merck strain of live attenuated (weakened) varicella virus. The virus was initially obtained from a child with natural varicella, introduced into human embryonic lung cell cultures, adapted to and propagated in embryonic guinea pig cell cultures, and finally propagated in human diploid cell cultures. The vaccine contains sucrose, phosphate, glutamate and processed gelatin as stabilizers.
And, btw, when they say "human embryonic lung cell cultures" and "human diploid cell cultures", they're referring to material from a previously aborted fetus.
A study in 2002 confirmed that adults exposed to natural chickenpox disease were protected from developing shingles and that there is concern that mass vaccination against chickenpox may cause a future epidemic of shingles, affecting more than 50 percent of Americans aged 10 to 44 years.
Just say no. The vax doesn't last forever, but getting the disease naturally usually does.

No more vax for my DD, ever. She had her 2 month shots and if I'd gotten off my *** and done more research before then, I would not have let her get ANY. The crap that's in them will disgust you.

"What Your Doctor Might Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations" by Dr Stephanie Cave is a good place to start.

BTW, Alejandro'sMommy, most vaxs don't provide lifelong immunity. All those shots you got as a kid? Worn off. I will research a little more and get back to you on that...

I could go on and on, ......
