Default VBAC may not be a possibility

I am really happy to be pregnant again, but I guess I'm just not so happy about the timing. My dr. told me at my 6 week checkup after the twins that to have a VBAC I needed to wait 18 months. I'm not sure of her reasoning but it has only been 8 1/2 months and I don't think I'll be able to get the VBAC I wanted.
I haven't been to see her for this pregnancy yet, I have an appointment in a couple weeks. I don't want to be completely let down then so I'm trying to cope now. Do you guys think it's a possibility to still have a VBAC or is it the general consensus that it's just too soon? If so, could I have a VBAC successfully for a third pregnancy or am I just stuck having c-sections?

If you want a VBAC find someone that will help you have one. I do not know what is available in your area, but midwives are usually huge supporters of VBACs. I do not know about the specifics of your pregnancy, but do not be comfortable with "no" until you hear it from several people. I suggest you find another professional that can help make your decision.

I was told 15 months by both my ob/gyn and my REI but I healed very well and very fast. My REI did say 18 month was better but that 15 months was what they considered the cut off. I know a few women who had Vbac's after getting pregnant just a few months after the first delivery. Do you think it might have something to do with you having twins? Maybe it takes longer for the uterus to heal after being streched from twins? I dont know just a guess

Twins are different. You are not just healing from the c/s you're healing from the pregnancy. One big issue is whether or not your stomach muscles have healed from being separated. For you, since you didn't carry full term, this might not be as big of an issue. If you go to a midwife, you need to go to one that is knowledgeable in complications from twin pregnancies.

When you say 18 months (or as Jennifer said, 15 months) does that mean that you would have had to wait the full 15-18 months to get pregnant and then plus the nine months of pregnancy? Or does that mean 15-18 months between deliveries? Because won't your twins be around 16 months or so when this baby is due? Perhaps you would qualify..

Also, I agree with amandarosie2-- you could look for a provider that would help you achieve your goal! Midwives are much more supportive!

I agree with the PP who recommended getting 2nd, even 3rd opinions. Find providers in your area who practice VBACs more often. I attempted a vbac with Jessica and she is just 17 months younger than Bobbie. I chickened out, and unfortunately my OBGYN just shrugged & said "prep the OR" when I screamed for a c-section mid-contraction. I really wish he didn't give in so easily.

Anyway, more and more providers are offering vbacs. Good luck & congrats on your pregnancy!

Oh-and for what it's worth, my first two were c-sections and my last two were both successful vbacs...so 2 c-sections certainly doesn't mean you have to have a 3rd.

Yes when they say 15 months they mean 15 months from birth to the next pregnancy. So since Nevy just turned 15 months I have an appt with my ob/gyn tomorrow for the official ok to start clomid. So they mean when your child from the last pregnancy is 15-18 months old then you can get pregnant again. My Dr. explained to me like this... your body had a major surgery and needs to recover plus you still have to recover from the pregnancy its self. Your body takes 9-12 months to fully recover from a pregnancy but a c-section can take up to 20 months before your body is fully healed. Since a Vbac is a serious thing they want to make sure you uterus has fully healed before they attempt to let you labor again. If the scar isn't fully healed it can open during labor. I would say get a second opinion but from everything I've read most Dr.'s wont take the risk if the pregnancy is closer than 12 months from the last. I hope you find someone who will do it for you. I know how important it is to have the option the next time around

I'm sure she meant from birth to next pregnancy on the 18 month time frame. The doctor I go to is in the same practice as my midwife and they worked together with me during my last pregnancy. I'm not sure what my midwife will say since I haven't gotten to see her or make an appointment with her yet. She is very popular since you can't use a midwife in any hospital in our city, we have to go over the bridge to the next state to use her (thankfully for me it's only 20 minutes). Their practice is very known amongst women in our community for full support of natural child delivery and VBACs, I'm just afraid that it's not going to be the case for me. All I really want is a healthy baby and for me to be healthy as well, so whatever it takes to accomplish that I am fine with. I guess I can't argue with the fact that I didn't really give my body enough time to heal. We'll see what they say and I'll keep you ladies informed.
