When you are told to download a program in order to watch a video, supposedly on youtube or another site, don't do it. Hackers put a virus into the software you think you are installing - and you download and install the virus. Once installed, you've got yourself a big problem.
I had this happen to me - a friend sent me a link to a news story on someone's blog - I saw a link to a video - clicked, and got prompted to install the software. I thought nothing of it. Well, I could view that particular video, which was fine. But each time I rebooted, it got worse. I saw ads everywhere for porn sites, in place of regular advertising. They popped up right over the regular ads.
The virus hooks onto the installation and it is very difficult to get rid of. I had to spend an hour on the phone with Norton, giving them remote access to my computer to get rid of it.
Please be careful of your downloads, and run your virus software and adaware updated and frequently. Thanks.
