Default Vision

At Jaxon's last appt the Dr said that he should be able to follow an object across the midline and even turn his head from left to right to follow an object. Also the Dr told us he was a little concerned that Jaxon has a really bad lazy eye and said that we should have his vision tested earlier than 2 years which is the normal recommended age here. Well DH and I brushed if off as he was only a week old and if he didnt do it then maybe it was a little early. Well we had a wic appt and the nurse said something about Jaxon not following an object or anything. Now DH and I are worried that he isnt seeing properly. We have a pink blanket like thing hanging on a window in our spare room and he constantly stares at the or the little blue blinking light on DH's computer but when you walk around he doesnt really look at you. Well last night dh was helping me give him a bath and almost accidentally stabbed Jaxon in the eye with his finger and Jaxon didnt even blink. Do you think that this is normal and he just isnt interested in following objects or should I be a little concerned?

This is definitely a question that you need to take to a specialist. Part of a well baby check up is to check for things like this so if they say something doesn't seem normal. . .it is cause to get it checked out further.

Well this is where we are concerned. When we talked to the nurse about Jaxon she told us that the dr said that they would check it out again at his 2 month check up. With the state medical that we have for Jaxon I can not go to another Dr other than his primary without a referral from the primary. Since we have no referral we are waiting for the Dr to decide that to do. I do not know what is normal for babies his age to be able to see or if they would even react to a finger being so close to their eye. I am confused as the Dr said Jaxon was in perfect health and that there wouldnt be another appt until his 2 month check up. But if he thought something was wrong with his Vision wouldnt the Dr wanted to see him sooner? I am just confused and DH is making me more concerned about it as he keeps saying that he doesnt want his baby boy to be blind and then I get worried and start thinking that something could be wrong

Maybe you could call your doc and tell them about the eye stab incident and see what they think, they may want to see Jaxon sooner. I don't know what to think either and I know it is frustrating waiting and not knowing if waiting will make things worse. Hang in there, if you are really worried you can be a little forceful and demand to see the doc sooner than the 2 month appt. I hope it isn't anything, keep us updated.

Babies cannot see well until much later. But I always think that mother's intuition is the best. If you think something is wrong, kick and scream until the doctor sees you.

I agree 100% with Val. 12 years ago when Jimmy was a newborn he had BAD vomiting issues. We were taking him in for checkups all the time and they kept saying that since they didn't actually see it happen...they couldn't do anything about it. Plus, he would likely outgrow it. So, we left and went and sat in heir nicely remodeled waiting room until he threw up all over. Then we got up, left and started taking him to a new pediatrician. Turns out his esophagus was under-developed and that was the cause of his problems.

I understand you can't go to another doctor so I would fight like heck with your current one until they thoroughly check out Jaxon.

I agree with everyone else. Call the Dr. but to give you some comfort.... Dh almost poked Nevy in the eye once to at about 6 weeks old and she never blinked. I know they see between 9-12 inches from their face so maybe a finger is to close for him to see. Nevy didnt really follow objects until about 2 months old. She would just look at it but would never really follow. I would say that if by two months he still isn't following then maybe its time to make his Dr. send you somewhere else. Good luck to you Kristin! I really hope Jaxon is ok. I know how it is to worry about stuff like that. After you wait so long for a baby the last thing you want is a problem. Although I know reflux is nothing compared to vision but I just wanted to let you know your not alone!
