The type of heating and cooling in the usa varies by region and age of the building.
Most homes in Florida built from 1970 forward have central air/heat on an electric system. When I was a child, we had window air conditioners and a small propane heater. You just don't need much heat in a house in Miami, but you do need some.
My house in NJ was also central air/heat (forced air). That house was built in the 1940s. My guess is that the central air compressor was added later. Many homes of that era and older are heated with oil. That house was fueled by natural gas.
Heat can be radiated and that can be steam or electric. You can have baseboard radiators in newer homes, or the old fashioned noisy steam radiators.
Many older homes used to have coal furnaces. Those were replaced by oil and natural gas systems.
I have seen homes in Idaho built over a hot underground spring that are heated with the natural hot water from those springs - they're old houses, and it was a really ingenious design.
