What age is appropriate for a TV in a child's room?
I just was wondering what everyone thinks:
At what age do you think it is okay for a child to have a TV in their room?

I know I didn't have a TV in my room growing up, but my FH seems to think having a TV in a child's room is no big deal since he had one since he was a toddler- he shared a room with his brother who is 3 years older. But my issue is that having a TV in a child's room just encourages more television exposure than is necessary. FH has told me him and his brother would be in their room all day playing video games and he thinks it's ok.

We put a TV in Jaycobs room when he was about a year old but it was a complete waste of money. We thought it would be good to have that way he could watch Blues Clues or Bob the Builder which he loved but we never turned it on, and not much has changed to this day, he still has a TV in his room but it gets turned on MAYBE once a month to watch a Movie. He spends most of his time playing in the backyard anyway. lol SO the girls wont be getting one in their room any time soon.

My opinion is try to postpone that moment as much as you can. A TV in the bedroom isn't really necessary and it gets hard to control the time they spend watching tv if they get one. I'd say no until they are teens and you can't avoid their pressure any longer

We are going to wait as long as possible. Although my parents were always home with us, my brother and I were raised to practically worship television. We had a tv in every room of our house except the bathroom, and my dad would often move a tv into the bathroom to get us to take a bath! I love television, but that is not a love I want to pass on to my DD. We already watch too much tv in our house as it is, and I don't really want to continue it by putting a tv in her room as she grows up. I would rather us all stop the tv as a family. I did spend a lot of time reading and playing outside as a child, but I have fonder memories of tv-related moments. We'll probably wait as long as possible.

You know, I used to watch TV atleast an hour a night, (My parents were like Kimchee's sort of, we had a TV in the living room, family room, kitchen, parents bedroom and the car.) but when I moved out on my own, it was choose between shopping or TV. I said see ya TV and don't miss it. I haven't watched more than 30 minutes of cable TV in over year. When I go to someone else's house and they have the television on I get sucked in really easy. But I just don't see the need. We do watch a lot of movies though and I think of that as different than cable. We have one really big TV and I think we will just keep it that way. Without cable there won't ever be a reason to argue over what to watch so I don't think we will ever need more.
To your question, my dad was totally against TV in the bedroom. So I didn't have that. And I don't see why I would have needed it.

I put a TV in my Cailyn's room when she turned 2. We use it for "rest time" for my three year old, because she doesn't take naps anymore. Or when we want to watch "grown up"movies on movie night, the girls watch their own videos in their room. Just because it's their room doesn't mean that it has to go on. My girls play all day with toys and dolls instead of watching the tube. I just make sure they have tons of other fun things to do like painting, flashcards, coloring books etc. If you think your kids will turn it on themselves just keep it unplugged or controlled by the light switch if possible. My older girls all have tv's in their rooms. They were a little older when they got them-I think they were 6, 10, & 11. So far, I haven't see it being a problem-I don't think they watch too much tv at all. My middle daughter, who is now 12, will have hers on Animal Planet at night-and it's on all night long. She doesn't watch it the entire time of course!
Having tv's in their rooms has been a useful tool in groundings too. However, if I thought they were watching more tv than actually playing or doing constructive activities, I wouldn't hesitate to remove them.

i must have been about 7 or so when my parents got a new TV for the lounge room so i got the old in my room but it broke after a few months (it was really old)... when i was about 11 my parents got a new tv for their room so again i got the old, this one lasted a few years before dying... i didn't really watch them much i think mainly cos the picture was clearer in the lounge room but i do remember a few times being in trouble and sent to my room and i would either have the volume off and be playing games or the volume really low and be watching tv

We do not have TVs in any of the 4 bedrooms in our home.
Our sons are 21 & 17.
We have TVs in the livingroom and familyroom.
The kitchen and the familyroom are connected, so it is easily viewed in the kitchen.
With cable and added stations, this way we can see and hear what is going on.
Yes, there are cable connections in the bedrooms, so it would be easily accessible.
Even when my son came home from college the past 2 summers,
he placed his tv in the garage.
We have never discussed it.
